Welcome to Childbirth and Parenthood Preparedness Class! I’m so excited to help welcome you on this every changing journey of pregnancy, birth, and parenthood! I created this class in the hopes of providing families practical information about the physiological aspects of labor, childbirth and postpartum, but also to help folks connect with the spiritual, mental and holier aspects of what it is to transition from someone who is pregnant or doesn’t have children into parents. But this isn’t about me, though I’ll share a bit of my story soon, it really is about you.
My goals for this Childbirth and Parenthood Preparation Class are simple and complex. I want you to trust, I want you to stand in your power and I want you to feel educated. I strongly believe that these three areas will help you towards a birth and 4th-trimester experience you can look back at with contentment and hopefully happiness.
Notice I didn’t say, “the perfect” birth it’s because I don’t believe in “a perfect birth” I believe that all birth is perfect. You will give birth the way you’re meant to give birth, my hope is that you, the birthing person, are able to feel powerful and empowered and in charge and control.
This doesn’t mean that you can control birth (you can not), this doesn’t mean that if you follow every step and suggestion that is offered that you’ll have the birth of your dreams, because you might not. What it means that through this weekend and in the days, weeks and months leading up to your birth that you are prepared for the unexpected, that you are confident in who you are, and that you’re in good relationship and communication with your body and that you are in good relationship and communication with your support team.
Labor, Birth and the 4th Trimester are full of maddening contradictions. It’s about relinquishing the human desire to control in order to give way to the more basic, inherited instincts of listening, hearing and honoring what your body and baby have to say. We have the tools, we just need to remember how to use them.
The journey may not be easy, but neither is labor or parenthood. It may not be hard either, because sometimes labor and parenthood aren’t hard. I hope that it will be challenging and life-affirming for you. Thank you for taking this journey with me.
